The Outsiders Activity - Greasers vs. Socs Rumble Interactive Class Activity
The Outsiders Activity Greasers vs. Socs Rumble is a fun and interactive class activity that will allow students to explore the similarities and differences between these two gangs in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. In groups, students will take on the perspective of either a Greaser or a Soc and answer prompting questions about their rival gang. Then, they will consider the similarities and differences between the gangs and begin to understand that they are not as different as they first appear. Finally, students will examine important quotes from The Outsiders that relate to this theme in the novel.
How The Outsiders Activity Socs vs. Greasers works:
- After posting the "Socs vs. Greasers" poster on the classroom door to welcome students, students will be broken into groups. With their new "gang," students will complete a group activity that exposes the similar hatred that each group feels for the other.
- After sharing their responses with the class, they will complete a second assignment that has them compare these two rival groups. This activity will expose the significant similarities between the Socs and the Greasers.
- To close the activity, students will receive quotation discussion cards that include quotes from The Outsiders that explore the idea that these two rival gangs are not as different as they appear.
