Figurative Language Escape Room Activity Bundle - Literary Devices Breakout Games: Engage your students with these highly engaging and interactive games to have them show their understanding of figurative language. This comprehensive set combines two thrilling escape scenarios – Escape the Observatory and the Haunted House – designed to deepen understanding and mastery of literary devices and figurative language. These escape rooms can be set up in a traditional format with classroom stations, or they can be used as a daily bell-ringer challenge. In the bell-ringer option, students work with their group for the first 5-10 minutes of class from Monday to Friday, progressively getting closer to escaping by the end of the week.

How These Escape Rooms Work:

For each escape room, students will collaborate in small groups and rotate among five stations set up in the classroom, engaging in puzzles and activities focused on the following types of figurative language: personification, puns, hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, simile, oxymoron, and onomatopoeia. The objective of the escape room is to successfully complete tasks at each station and collect various mystery codes related to figurative language. Alternatively, the activities can be structured as a bell-ringer, with students tackling one station daily, gradually working towards their escape by the end of the week.

 ➡️ Escape the Observatory:

Scenario: In this escape room scenario, players find themselves in Edward Darwin's reclusive observatory atop Clearwater Springs, where his strange behavior and locked doors suggest a mysterious puzzle to solve. They must decipher a complex circuit of astrologically themed switches to restore power and open an exit door. With five locked journals featuring literary devices and matching constellation images, players must unlock each journal to uncover clues that could help them escape Edward's puzzling observatory. Below are the challenges included:

  • Switch 1 - Alliteration: Students will analyze passages on 5 cards to identify instances of alliteration. They will sequence the cards based on the bolded letters within each passage that spell out a word. This sequence will reveal the initial code needed to unlock the constellations journal.
  • Switch 2 - Puns: Students will decipher a color-coded passage on a parchment scroll. By identifying sentences containing puns, they will determine the colors that form the code needed to unlock the next journal.
  • Switch 3: Hyperbole: Students will arrange colored cards using a key to create a cohesive story. They will count instances of hyperbole to obtain the first part of the code. Then, rearranging the cards will reveal a second story where they count hyperbole instances again for the second code. This code unlocks the next constellation journal page.
  • Switch 4 - Personification: Students will sort sentence strips based on whether they use personification, uncovering a hidden phrase necessary to open the subsequent constellation journal.
  • Switch 5: All Figurative Language: In the final task, students will organize cards on a key ring based on their use of puns, hyperbole, personification, or alliteration. This arrangement will reveal a passphrase essential for escaping the observatory.

 ➡️ Escape the Haunted House:

Scenario: House 13 on Shady Knoll Lane, long avoided for its eerie reputation tied to Madame Anguis, becomes the focus when students receive a mysterious package labeled "Vital Medical Advice Required Immediately." When they venture inside, they find the mansion unexpectedly lit by flickering candlelight. As a door slams shut behind them, trapping them inside, they discover five rooms each lit by torches matching the colors of locks on the exit. Below are the challenges included:

  • The Black Room - Simile: Students will read three cards and identify similes within them to form a three-number code needed to unlock the black lock.
  • The Blue Room - Metaphors: Students will read a parchment passage and count how many metaphors are used. They must then fold the page to reveal a second text and count metaphors again for the second digit to unlock the blue lock.
  • The Yellow Room - Oxymoron: Students will examine three texts to find examples of oxymorons. They will determine the order of the cards by creating an oxymoronic expression using the titles of the texts, obtaining a three-number code to unlock the yellow lock.
  • The Green Room - Onomatopoeia: Students will analyze a spooky passage for examples of onomatopoeia. Inputting these words into a table will reveal a mystery phrase necessary to open the green lock.
  • The Red Room: All Figurative Language: Students will showcase their understanding of simile, metaphor, oxymoron, and onomatopoeia by arranging sentences into a grid. Once correctly organized, this information will unveil a four-letter word essential for unlocking the red lock.
