Common challenges that students face when making inferences in reading. For example, unclear language, lack of background knowledge, or personal biases.

➡️ Making Inferences on Social Media: In this engaging digital activity, students will examine three social media profiles and use their reading skills to infer information about the person who owns the account. Each of the digital profiles includes posts, conversations, updates, and images that reveal information about the person's traits, interests, relationships, and more! Students will complete one of the three included digital assignments designed to help students infer meaning.
Prompting questions are provided to help guide students' inferences of the social media profiles. Students must infer information from the profiles based on their background knowledge and demonstrate what evidence led them to make that inference.
➡️ Inferring With Music Lyrics: Students will immediately be hooked in this activity where they will examine the lyrics of four songs that require students to use their inference skills. Each of the selected songs tells a story, and students will examine the song lyrics and infer the meaning of the narrative by inferring information. With songs from Taylor Swift, Adele, The Chicks, and Miranda Lambert, your students will be totally hooked into the activity.
➡️ Text Message Inferences Activity: Bring the world of texting into the classroom with this fun digital activity where students will read six text message conversations that require students to use their inference skills to understand. Students will examine details from the text messages to make inferences about the speakers, their traits, their relationship to each other, their location, and what they are discussing! Students must infer information from the texts based on their background knowledge and demonstrate what evidence led them to make that inference. The resource also includes blank digital options for students to create their own text message conversations!
➡️ The Case of the Missing Camera Inference Activity: Students will imagine that they find an old-school camera on the side of the road with no identifying information. They decide to look through the pictures for clues as to who the camera belongs to. Students will examine details from the most recent photos taken by the camera to make inferences about the camera's owner in this creative digital activity!
➡️ 4 Pictures 1 Inference Activity: This fun digital activity includes five "4 Pictures 1 Inference" assignment pages, each with unique photos that students must examine and form inferences based on their background knowledge. Each assignment asks students to infer meaning from individual pictures. Then, they must connect the images together and use their inferencing skills to form a narrative.
➡️ Vaguebook Social Media Inferences Activity: Students will examine vague social media posts that require students to use their inference skills. Vaguebooking is a term used to describe an intentionally vague social media status update that prompts friends to ask questions. If you do not know what the post is about, you must infer its meaning by using your background knowledge! This fun digital activity will have students do just that by making inferences about possible meanings for each of the posts.
➡️ BONUS: Inference Classroom Posters: These two classroom posters will not only look great on display, but they will also help your students understand and apply inferences in their reading. The first poster includes information on what it means to infer while the other provides sentence stems that students can use when they are making inferences.
