The Giver Activity - A World Without Pain Article and Novel Assignment is a ready-to-use resource that will allow students to examine a world with no pain as the community members experience in The Giver by Lois Lowry. In the novel, community members have been completely sheltered from feeling any emotional or physical pain.

While this seems positive, Jonas comes to realize that just as there is no pain without memory, there is also no true happiness. Allow your students to make a real-world connection to the novel by reading and watching a video about a condition where people feel absolutely no pain. This activity is sure to engage your students in thoughtful discussion about the importance that pain plays in our lives.

How The Giver Activity - A World Without Pain Activity Works:

Students will be greeted in the classroom by a colorful poster welcoming them to a world without pain. Students will work in groups of four and the teacher will use the slideshow to guide every element of the lesson, starting with a class discussion and a stand-up/sit-down activity. Then, students will read an article called “Living in a World Without Pain.” After reading, students will watch an interview about a girl who has a condition where she experiences no pain.

Afterwards, students will consider whether they would like to live a life without pain. They will compile a list of negative emotions or emotional pain like loneliness, grief, loss, jealousy, panic, disgust, sorrow, anger, embarrassment, shame, or guilt.

To deepen their understanding, guide students to work collaboratively as a group to complete a chart that outlines the advantages and disadvantages of living a life free from emotional pain. Finally, students will consider how this activity relates to the novel and how it impacts the community, The Giver, and Jonas as he goes through the process of discovering pain.
