Acrostic Poetry Writing Activity: Snowball Collaborative Writing
This acrostic poetry writing activity is a fun way to shake up your poetry unit with some collaborative writing. The snowball writing method will engage even your most reluctant writers and engage them in poetry writing in a low-stress and fun way. This activity combines collaboration and acrostic poetry, and you will be amazed at what your students will create.
How the acrostic poetry writing activity works:
- Print the 30 pages included in this resource and distribute them to your students randomly. Each student receives a page with a unique acrostic poetry writing topic!
- Provide students with 2-4 minutes to write the first line of the acrostic poem.
- Students write their name beside their writing, crumple up the paper into a ball, and throw it to the front of the classroom This will lead to instant engagement! Everyone goes to the front of the classroom to retrieve a different “snowball” and returns to their desks.
- The next student reads what has been written so far on the new topic and contributes the second line! They again crumple their paper, throw it, and retrieve a new one. This process is continued until all poems are done.
- After the poem is done, it is returned to the first writer who completes a good copy of the collaborative acrostic poem.
